Sustainability
Vancouver is situated in an exceptional natural environment and is often cited as one of the best cities in the world in which to live, work, visit or invest. We also have one of the smallest carbon footprints of any city in North America and we’re a leader in green building, planning and technology.
LiveCity Vancouver itself addresses the challenges of hosting a sustainable event for so many people in a number of exciting ways. We will:
- Set a goal of diverting from the landfill 85 per cent of waste in the sites, through extensive on-site recycling and composting and re-purposing materials such as fencing after the Games
- Focus on communicating online - not in print - minimizing the impact on our forests
- Re-purpose materials after the Games; and
- Demonstrate new technology. We know that, with the hundreds of thousands of visitors we expect over the course of the Games, our David Lam Park grass would be under some stress. And so, rather than paving the park, we will be laying down a new product over the grass, made from 100 per cent recycled and recyclable tires. And the day after the Games are over, we will begin the process to restore the park with new sod in time for next summer’s activities. It’s a solution that will be a great legacy for Vancouver festivals for years to come.

LiveCity Vancouver was awarded a VANOC Sustainability Star.
The Vancouver 2010 Sustainability Star program recognizes initiatives by Games partners, sponsors and VANOC that demonstrate positive and measurable social, economic and environmental impacts.
A Sustainability Star jury, comprised of Government Partners, corporate sponsors, external experts and VANOC representatives, evaluates all applications for eligibility.
